GST Registration

EPF is one of the main platform of savings in India for nearly all people working in Government, Private or Public sector organizations. It is implemented by the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) of India.

Companies which have employee strength of 20 or more are required to be registered with PF Department. The capacity of 20 includes contract employees like housekeeping, security or other contractual workers in the business. Those companies which do not have the endorsed number of employees but willing to register themselves to provide the advantages of Provident Fund to their employees can register voluntarily with the Regional Provident Fund Office. Registration has to be done within One month from the date of hiring 20 employees. Any delay may result in a penalty.

Eligibility for Employees Provident Fund

The registration in GST is PAN based and State specific. Supplier has to register in each such State or Union territory from where he effects supply if he fulfills any of the following conditions:

  • Having an annual aggregate turnover from all-India operations which is above the threshold limit of Rs. 20 Lakhs (Rs. 10 Lakhs for North-Eastern States).
  • Currently registered under any of the earlier indirect tax regimes (VAT, Excise Laws, Service Tax Laws) irrespective of the threshold limit.
  • Having branches in multiple states or multiple business verticals in one state
  • Making any supply to other states.
  • Required to pay tax under Reverse Charge (In case your supplier is not registered under GST).
  • Required to deduct tax at source or an Input Service Distributor.
  • Agents of a supplier.
  • Supplying goods or services through E-commerce Operator.
  • E-commerce Operator / Aggregator who supplies goods or services under his brand name (e.g. Flipkart, Amazon, Ola).
  • Supplying online information and database access or retrieval services from a place outside India to a person in India, other than a registered taxable person.

Important Aspects Relating to PF Registration

PF Return

Provident fund return must be filed by all entities having PF registration every month. PF return is due on the 25th of each month. Further, a final PF return is due on the 25th of April for the year ended on 31st March.

PF Payment

Provident Fund (PF) payments are due on the 15th of each month. The employer must deposit a total of 12% or 10% of the employee wages towards PF on or before this date every month. For most entities, the PF rate of 12% would be applicable.

Unified Portal

To improve ease of doing business, all services relating to provident fund like PF registration, PF return filing and payment of PF contribution has been made available online through the Unified Portal.



The Employee Provident Fund has launched the Unified Portal to streamline and simplify all aspects of provident fund for both employers and employees. Employees who have the newly allotted UAN can use the Unified Portal for various services.

PF Withdrawal

Employees who have contributed to PF can withdraw money in their PF account for various reasons by applying on the Unified Portal. PF can be withdrawn for house purchase, medical reasons, marriage or education of family members.

Documents and Information Required for EPF Registration

PAN Card of the Business or Applicant

  • PAN Card copy of Proprietor/Partner/Director
  • PAN Card copy of firm/company/society/trust.

Identity and Address Proof of Authorised Signatory

Identity proof and address proof documents like aadhaar card, passport, driving license,  or voters identity card of authorised signatory.

Business Registration Document

Proof of business registration like incorporation certificate or partnership deed or registration certificate must be submitted for all types of registered entities.

Address Proof for Place of Business

Documents like rental agreement or sale deed along with copies of electricity bill or latest property tax receipt or municipal khata copy must be submitted for the address mentioned in the EPF Registration application.

Bank Account Proof

Scanned copy cancelled cheque must be submitted for the bank account mentioned in the registration application.

Digital Signature

Class 2 or class 3 digital signature is required for the authorised signatory to sign and submit the EPF application.
